Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT) is a unique organization in the Tea World
The plantation sector plays a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s economy, contributing nearly 30% of the country’s foreign exchange earnings. This sector’s significance extends beyond mere economic impact, shaping the nation’s agricultural landscape and cultural heritage.
Tea was introduced to Sri Lanka by the British around two centuries ago, and with it came the Tamil community from southern India. These laborers were brought to work in the coffee, tea, and rubber plantations. Since their arrival, this community has made invaluable contributions to the development and prosperity of Sri Lanka’s economy through their hard work and dedication.
Today, nearly one million out of Sri Lanka’s 20 million people reside on plantations, all of whom are now citizens of Sri Lanka. Among them, approximately 320,000 are employed directly within the plantation sector, while their dependents number over one million. The sector supports not only the immediate workforce but also a substantial network of families dependent on its success.
Within the plantation workforce, about 70% hold permanent positions, providing them with job security and stability. In contrast, 10% are casual employees, and the remaining 20% are outside laborers who do not reside on the estates. Notably, women constitute approximately 51% of the labor force, reflecting their vital role in this sector.
Plantations cover an estimated 230,000 hectares of land, with around 190,000 hectares actively cultivated. The sector is a major contributor to Sri Lanka’s agricultural output, accounting for nearly 45% of the country’s tea production and 42% of its rubber production. This substantial output underscores the sector’s pivotal role in both domestic and international markets.
The tea industry, in particular, remains Sri Lanka’s largest agricultural export sector, generating significant foreign exchange earnings. The government, through various agencies, is committed to supporting the growth of the tea industry by enhancing production and expanding export opportunities. This ongoing support is crucial for maintaining the sector’s competitiveness on the global stage.
In addition to tea and rubber, the plantation sector is also a key producer of other agricultural products such as vegetables, milk, and fruits. These products, often produced by estate residents, contribute to the local market and provide an additional source of income for many families.
The majority of workers in this sector are descendants of Indian Tamil laborers brought by British colonial planters who initially established tea and rubber cultivation on the island. Their hard work and dedication have helped elevate Sri Lankan tea, branded as CEYLON TEA, to a global standard of excellence. Additionally, certain types of Sri Lankan rubber are unique and hold exclusive markets worldwide.
Overall, the plantation sector is not only a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s economy but also a testament to the enduring contributions of its workforce, shaping the country’s agricultural and economic landscape.
