Meal Programme for the Plantation Children:

Investing in early childhood development is a crucial strategy for the future growth of any country, and our meal program for children is a significant step in this direction. The Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) in Sri Lanka, which encompass nearly one million residents, have approximately 55,000 children under the age of five. These children represent the future workforce of the Plantation Sector and Sri Lanka as a whole. To date, over 20,000 children have been registered in Child Development Centers (CDCs) across 9 administrative districts.

Our meal program consists of four key components:

  1. Healthy and Balanced Mid-Day Meals: We will provide nutritious and balanced meals to children in all CDCs to support their growth and development.
  2. Increased Iron Intake: Efforts will be made to boost the iron levels in children’s diets to meet required health standards and prevent deficiencies.
  3. Improved Household Diets: We will work to enhance the overall diet quality of households to ensure that nutritional benefits extend beyond the CDCs.
  4. CDC Demonstration Home Garden Plots: We will develop demonstration home garden plots at CDCs to promote sustainable food practices and provide fresh produce for the children.

This comprehensive program aims to lay a strong foundation for the future by nurturing the next generation’s health and well-being, ultimately contributing to the long-term development of the country.

Objectives

  1. Provide Healthy Meals: Offer balanced mid-day meals for all children under 5 at CDCs in the plantation sector for 6 months, 5 days a week.
  2. Increase Iron Intake: Ensure children’s iron levels meet required health standards.
  3. Improve Household Diets: Enhance household diets by 10% and provide nutritious lunches for pregnant mothers.
  4. Develop Home Gardens: Establish 800 CDC demonstration home garden plots.
